As Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) prepares for the commercial launch of its 4G services, the state-owned telecom giant has unveiled a fresh logo symbolizing its commitment to security, affordability, and reliability. Along with the logo, BSNL has announced the introduction of seven new services, including cutting-edge spam protection, enhanced internet access, and innovative solutions aimed at bridging digital divides. This rollout marks a pivotal moment in BSNL’s journey as it gears up for the next phase of India’s telecommunications revolution.
BSNL’s New Logo: A Symbol of Transformation
In an event held at BSNL’s headquarters in New Delhi, the company unveiled its new logo, which encapsulates the core values of security, affordability, and reliability. Attended by key dignitaries such as Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, and Department of Telecommunications Secretary Neeraj Mittal, the event marked a fresh chapter for the state-owned telecom provider. The redesigned logo aligns with BSNL’s efforts to modernize its services and present a forward-thinking image as it enters the 4G and 5G era.
Introduction of New Services
To complement its rebranding efforts, BSNL has rolled out seven new services, each designed to enhance the user experience and improve connectivity across the country. These services reflect the company’s mission to keep pace with evolving technological trends and cater to the needs of modern consumers.
1. Spam Protection
BSNL has introduced a sophisticated spam protection system that automatically filters out malicious SMS and phishing attempts. This feature is designed to protect users without interrupting their experience or requiring them to take any action. By preventing harmful messages from reaching consumers, BSNL aims to enhance security in the digital space.
2. Wi-Fi Roaming for FTTH Customers
The company is also expanding its services for Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) consumers by introducing a national Wi-Fi roaming service. This will allow users to access high-speed internet at BSNL hotspots across India, reducing their data usage while providing seamless connectivity. The service is expected to be especially beneficial for travelers and remote workers who rely on stable internet connections.
3. Fibre-Based Intranet TV Service
BSNL is making strides in the entertainment sector with the launch of its fibre-based intranet TV service, which offers access to over 500 live channels. The telecom provider is also introducing a Pay TV facility, where users can customize their viewing options. Notably, BSNL has announced that the data used for streaming TV content will not count against the data cap in customers’ FTTH plans, providing a more flexible entertainment solution.
4. Any Time SIM (ATM) Kiosks
In a move to make SIM card management more convenient, BSNL has introduced Any Time SIM (ATM) kiosks. These kiosks enable users to purchase, replace, upgrade, or port their SIM cards at any time of the day. Additionally, these machines are equipped with QR-enabled UPI payments and support multiple languages, making the process smoother and more accessible.
5. Direct-to-Device (D2D) Connectivity
One of the most exciting developments is BSNL’s new Direct-to-Device (D2D) connectivity solution, which merges satellite and terrestrial mobile networks. This service is particularly useful in remote areas and during emergencies, where traditional networks may fail. By enabling UPI payments and ensuring communication in isolated regions, BSNL’s D2D service aims to support disaster management and emergency response efforts.
6. Encrypted Communications for Government and Relief Agencies
In its continued efforts to support government and emergency services, BSNL has introduced an encrypted communications platform designed for relief agencies. This platform will rely on balloon-based and drone-based communication systems to widen coverage during disasters, ensuring that vital communication channels remain operational in crisis-hit regions.
7. Private 5G Network for Mining Services
BSNL has also ventured into the industrial sector by collaborating with C-DAC to introduce a private 5G network for mining services. This high-speed, low-latency network is expected to enable advanced applications such as artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in both underground and open-pit mines. The applications of this network include real-time safety analytics, control of automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and remote maintenance using augmented reality (AR). Additionally, the network will support fleet tracking and optimization, further enhancing the efficiency of mining operations.
BSNL’s Technological Advancements: A Step Toward 5G
The unveiling of these new services comes just months after BSNL introduced its 4G and 5G-ready Universal SIM (USIM) platform and over-the-air (OTA) update system in August 2024. These advancements are designed to facilitate a smooth transition from 4G to 5G as BSNL expands its network across India. With the commercial launch of 4G on the horizon, BSNL is positioning itself as a key player in India’s telecommunications sector, ready to compete with private operators like Airtel and Jio.
